I encourage you to do the same and support these talented authors. You can also scroll through old posts for even more amazing books and authors.

Below, in the comments, you are welcome to add your name, title, and genre – along with a 500 word scene or blurb. (Please no erotica or extreme violence) I will blast and share away.

Thanks for playing!!

Here’s mine from my novel “Broken Smiles” (Women’s contemporary romance.)

****

She sang and strummed, and for a moment the smell of disinfectant and the stark walls faded away. When it was close to lunchtime, she stopped for the day, but Laidan promised she would sing again the next morning. When the room and hallway finally cleared, she stood and closed the door. With more reverence, she sang her mother’s favorite song that she had written a few years earlier.

Release these feet from concrete and heat

Run barefoot in fields of golden wheat

Feel the forest floor sink between toes

Discover caves where nobody knows

So kick off the shoes that weigh you down

Find a place where no one’s around

Eileen lay still in her deep sleep, unmoved, unchanged. Laidan set down her guitar and went to the attached bathroom. Her hands gripped the sides of the vanity as she braced herself. It had been so hard when she’d lost her father — she couldn’t go through it again.

Happy reading!

Tara

They sat at the end of the dock, dangling bare feet in the water in the dim moonlight. It was easy to talk there and Conn traced her fingers while Taisie spoke of her time in college, her major in fiber arts, and her love of working with yarn to create garments. Apparently Conn had never gotten to attend college and loved hearing about her experiences there.
Conn leaned back, holding her hand on his thigh. “Your art is so important to you, I can tell. It’s really not different from the music I create, just a different medium. But I can see that it comes from your heart.”
Taisie shook her head and said modestly, “Maybe, but it’s a small craft, shared by individual people all over the world. A garment goes to one or two people, maybe, then is worn out and discarded. Your music is passed to thousands of people who can share it and let it give them joy.”
“It’s the magic that is dispensed with your art that counts, whether to one person or to many,” Conn replied seriously.
    “Magic?” Taisie didn’t understand.
“Aye, it’s the heart of the craft, the love and sweat that you put into it. If you think about the old tales, the magic comes from inside the person who creates it.”
It was quiet then, neither of them speaking as they considered their conversation. After a while Conn pulled out a pipe from the back pocket of his jeans where it seemed he always kept a flute or whistle. He put it to his lips and played and the tune sparkled, like the moonlight on the water. Taisie thought, “This is what magic feels like.”

    Thank you!

  4. Sounds great! Here is my extract from The Millionaire Plan which I write under the name of Kay Harborne.
    *****
Whoa! What was she thinking of, kissing Jed like that? She pulled away, fighting down the fire that was threatening to engulf her entire body, and looked over at the dog standing in the doorway.
“I think she’s trying to tell us to stop congratulating ourselves. She did all the hard work,” she said, hoping her voice sounded steadier than she felt. She didn’t dare catch Jed’s eye, dreading what she’d see there. He’d just given her a light kiss on the lips and she’d practically thrown herself at him! He already had a low enough opinion of her because she was planning on hooking a millionaire, now what must he think?
“So she did.” Jed’s voice was light, as if nothing had happened between them. Well it hadn’t, had it? It had only been a quick kiss, for goodness sake.
You call that a quick kiss?
She heard him get up but still didn’t trust herself to turn and face him.
“I’ll just go and write up my notes and check through the photos I’ve taken,” he told her. “I’ll be in Mike’s study if you need me.”
    “Okay.” She nodded.
The next minute he was gone, leaving her to her thoughts.
Oh, nice one, Amber. Great timing to snog the guy like that when you’ve got to spend the whole evening together, not to mention tomorrow morning and the boat trip home.
    Hang on, he kissed me.
Yes, but you didn’t have to kiss him back quite so enthusiastically, did you? She cringed as she remembered the way she’d ran her fingers through his hair, pulling his head closer to her. What had come over her?

  5. My new book FEVER DREAM is out today…

This shouldn’t be happening. I don’t understand it. I haven’t had a patient like this in years – not since my first months of residency. Connie Marchetti brought her son to me three days ago because he couldn’t shake a cold, and now I’m fighting to keep him alive.

    And I’m losing.

Two days ago, I sent out a full panel of blood tests, including several things that I would never normally check on an eight-year-old boy. He must have some sort of auto-immune disorder, but he’s been my patient for three years, and there’s never been the slightest sign of it. And, anyway, boys are far less prone to most auto-immune diseases than girls are. There was never any reason to suspect it.

There is now, though. I’m fighting to save him, but his own body is fighting against me. I haven’t been able to get his temperature below a hundred and one, I haven’t been able to get his breathing anywhere close to normal and he hasn’t eaten solid food in close to a week.
“Damnit, Michael, I didn’t save you three years ago just so you could die on me now!” Yelling at him isn’t going to help, but I don’t know what else I can do at this point, except to admit defeat and send him to a bigger hospital. Someplace with more resources to, hopefully, figure out what’s going on with him and treat it in time.

Three years ago, Michael Marchetti and his sister Celia were trapped in a basement during that awful winter storm. I went into Celia’s dream and figured out where they were, so that they could be rescued before they froze to death. But dreams aren’t going to help now. The answer, if there is one, is in his bloodwork, or, far more likely, in the mind of another doctor who can see whatever it is I’m missing.

An excerpt I like to call ‘Superhero Lies.’

“Wow, piano. I guess you must be pretty good to be playing a recital.”
Luke’s voice had turned, I don’t know, a little amazed. I guess it might seem amazing to think that plain Andrea Jamison actually had a talent—a talent my parents had pressured me into since the age of six.
I shrugged my shoulders and lifted my head. “I guess.”

“I mean, that’s really cool. Could I hear you play sometime?”

Swiftly, I shifted my view back to the inside of my locker. He just looked too cute leaning there like a model escaped from a photo shoot. And he wanted to hear me play? At my piano recital? This was a crazy world!

Then I zeroed in on the superhero decal inside my locker. If Luke saw that, he’d know me for the big fat liar that I am. Why had I told Luke that I hated superheroes? Of all the lies, that one was just plain stupid.

    I slammed the locker shut.

Luke stood up straight, apparently surprised. His face scrunched up like I’d almost taken off one of his eyelashes.

“Sorry,” I tried to apologize while hoping he’d forget about the piano thing.

“So, when can I hear you play?”

This boy could not be distracted. Maybe if I fainted here in the hallway. Of course, he might have to catch me, and then he’d be touching me, and that was way too romantic for this Aubrey Academy girl.

Here is the first book in my YA time travel series, Screwing Up Time.

Mark Montgomery’s life is perfect…until she time travels into it.

Mark is a slacker content with his life. He’s a senior at New Haven Prep, has a great friend, and after graduation he’ll get a brand new sports car from his parents, assuming he stays out of trouble. Then, she comes into his life—Miranda with her I-just-escaped-from-a-Renaissance-Fair clothing. Only, she hasn’t. She has come from Bodiam Castle in the Middle Ages and demands a secret ingredient and a book of recipes for traveling through the treacherous colors of time. Although Mark has never even heard of either before, he must find them, or Miranda will die. To save her, Mark must break into a psych hospital to visit his grandfather who once tried to kill him, pass through the colors of time, take on a medieval alchemist, prevent Miranda’s marriage to a two-timing baron, and keep it all hidden from his parents. The sports car is definitely in trouble.

“Faith, Hope, and Murder” is a Christian traditional mystery with elements of romance published by me, Elise M. Stone

Emotionally wounded, with prayers unanswered, Faith Andersen turned her back on God years ago. She’s devoted herself to her work as a web designer—and a series of meaningless relationships in place of the love she desires. She’s happier that way; at least, that’s what she tells herself.

When her best friend asks her to help a stranger, she has no idea the problem is murder. The victim, a smuggler who brought drugs and human beings over the Mexican border, had plenty of enemies. And even more dangerous friends.

Pastor John Menard has problems of his own. When the pretty skeptic appears in his office to discuss a new web site for the church, John is intrigued, but cautious. With a recent divorce and an accusation of misconduct, he must win back the trust of his congregation—or risk losing his church. While he struggles to prove his innocence, there’s no space in his life for a relationship.

When John discovers Faith is poking into a homicide, he fears for her safety. Spiced with danger and opposing beliefs, their mutual attraction grows. But have they gotten themselves into more trouble than either of them could have imagined?

  11. This is wonderful! Thanks for doing this! This is an excerpt from the 1st book in the series, An Unlikely Arrangement. Historical romantic suspense.

    http://amzn.to/1JzXjZP

Sarah entered the room, picked up the tortoise-shell hairbrush, and began grooming Ruth’s hair. The housekeeper worked in silence, the brush rough against Ruthie’s scalp.
The sound of horse’s hooves on cobblestone and a high-pitched whinny interrupted the two women.
Ruth escaped Sarah’s grasp and peered through the upstairs window. “Why is a horse-drawn milk truck parked in the alley? Sarah?” She looked over her shoulder, but the room was empty.
    Sarah has turned traitor, too.
Drawn to the scene below, she peered at the sight below. “Why would a headmaster drive a milk wagon?”
The front door’s brass knocker reverberated through the house.
    My fate has arrived.
The voices enticed her into the hallway to listen.
“Please wait in the drawing room, Mr. Kirby. Our daughter will be down soon.” Mother’s voice sounded strangely light and friendly.
“Mr. Kirby?” She scurried back to the bedroom determined not to come out.
A knock on the door startled her and she sat hard onto the bed, heart pounding.
Her mother swept into the room—all business. “Sarah has prepared the green dress. It is more suitable for receiving visitors. Change and be downstairs in fifteen minutes, not a moment longer.”
    “Who is Mr. Kirby?”
“If you want to find out you best hurry.” Mrs. Squire left the room without further comment.
Alone, Ruth stared at the empty doorway.
In the next instant, Sarah appeared—the freshly brushed green satin in her hand. Neither woman spoke as the homespun cotton fell to the floor. Ruth stood woodenly as Sarah pulled the green dress over her head and fastened the intricate buttons.
After a final adjustment, Sarah gave a gentle push at the small of Ruth’s back. “Come on, dearie. It’s not as bad as all that. Go on now, I’m right behind ya.”
Tears threatened to spill over the rims of her eyes as she moved forward on leaden legs.
The conversation in the parlor sounded polite, friendly. The familiar creak of the stairs announced her approach, and her parents turned in tandem to welcome her. The parlor was a favorite room. Ornate cherrywood framed the forest green velvet sofa, a cozy place to curl up and read. Colorful flowered globes sat atop the twin oil lamps and each graced the matching end tables. Heavy, dark green drapes kept the warm afternoon sun at bay. In the corner on the settee, next to the glassed bookshelves, sat a man she thought looked too young to be a headmaster of anything, much less a school full of young women.
He stood and removed his hat, exposing sandy blond hair, bright blue eyes, a strong chin, and easy grin.
“Ruth, please greet Mr. Peter Kirby. Mr. Kirby, this is our daughter, Ruth,” Mother smiled. “Mr. Kirby has agreed to marry you. The ceremony will be next week in the family church.”

The Duke Conspiracy is a Sweet Regency Romance on sale for 99 cents

    http://amzn.to/18YsbHK

    Here’s an excerpt:

Alex gazed at his old friend in admiration. If anyone had ever told him he would be standing in Burlington House surrounded by Elgin’s Marbles debating with Miss Rosamund Smythe about who might be conspiring to entrap him into marriage, he would never have believed such a claim. But here they were. And she looked mighty fetching as she gazed up at him expectantly. He had to make an effort to remember what she had said. Oh yes, something about ideas to investigate. He wondered absently what she could possibly know about investigations and clues and all that. But she was right. They needed to have a direction. The only trouble was he was drawing a blank about any possible ideas.
All he could do was shrug helplessly. “I am so sorry, Rose, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. To the best of my knowledge I have never had any dealings with Broderick. I developed an instant dislike of the man upon first making his acquaintance, but I cannot even tell you why, as we have barely conversed.”
The duke was clearly flabbergasted over this development and was even slightly ashamed to not have a ready solution. Rose must have realized this. She hastened to reassure him. “Never mind about that. We both agreed earlier that the best place for us to start is with Lady Anne. That will have to be my job, as you will just be walking straight into their plot if you try to do anything about it. Now, I really must be going, so we must hurry and establish another appointment to meet up to discuss any of our findings. In the meantime, you should speak to your solicitors or man of affairs or whatever you might have along those lines and see if they are aware of any issues Broderick might have with you. Those gentlemen might know more on the subject than you.”
“How did you get so smart about such things?”
Alex was intrigued by the blush that spread over her face at this unanswerable question. The only thing she could offer was “My father is a diplomat,” with as much dignity as possible.
Alex allowed the moment to pass and was rewarded by the look of relief on her face. He hurried to make an appointment as they saw her maid approaching. “Would it be remarked upon if you come here again tomorrow or the next day?”
“Probably not,” Rose answered. “My mother never rises before noon and is really only concerned with how I spend my evenings. But you had best give me at least one day to try to make the acquaintance of Lady Anne, so let us say the day after tomorrow. That gives me a day and a half to gather as much information as possible. I shall start with my friend Lady Elizabeth. She is a font of knowledge about the ton, as well as being friendly with Lady Anne.” While she was speaking she fumbled with her drawing supplies, finally tucking them under her arm. “Wish me luck,” she concluded as she once more faced the duke.
The duke watched a myriad of emotions chase themselves across his companion’s face. He was unable to identify most of them, but he thought she looked rather wistful as she offered him a brief curtsy before she hurried away without another word.
Alex stood in the same spot for several moments, watching her retreating figure, wondering if she would look back before exiting the building. He was unprepared for the profound disappointment that swept over him as she strode away with purpose, never once glancing back in his direction. Slowly bringing his focus back to the statue she had been sketching, the duke allowed the entire interlude to play itself out in his mind. Giving his head a shake to rid himself of the melancholy that had befallen him, he followed in her footsteps and strode from the hall.

    Happy reading everyone 🙂

I pushed myself up and nearly stopped breathing again. The man who I had just knocked to the ground was none other than Prince Jarin. Definitely not the shadow, I thought. “That’s it, you—” the prince began as he pushed himself up and raised his fist. “Stop!” I guarded my face with both hands. “Katie?” “Ah…hello, fancy meeting you here,” I stammered.
Even though Katie is a royal princess, all she knows is how to be a spy. She constantly goes from mission to mission, never getting the chance to understand her birthright. This all changes when her father sends her on a mission to Floric with the cover of being a princess who is trying to win the prince’s heart. This mission proves to be very different from the others with a shadowy figure to chase, secret passages to explore, secrets to keep and the problem of betrayal that she is about to discover.

  22. Thank you, Tara! Hello to other authors and readers!
    My book is YAKIMALI’S GIFT
    Historical romance for ages 12+

It’s 1775 in Mexico, New Spain, and 15-year-old Fernanda Marquina, of Spanish and Pima Indian ancestry, can’t seem to live up to her mother’s expectations or fit into the limited female roles of her culture. Fernanda grabs any opportunity to ride the horses she loves, racing across the desert, dreaming of adventure in faraway lands. But when a tragic accident presents her with the adventure she longed for, it’s at a greater price than she could ever have imagined. With her family, Fernanda joins Juan Bautista de Anza’s historic colonization expedition to California.
On the arduous four-month journey, Fernanda makes friends with Feliciana, the young widow Fernanda can entrust with her deepest thoughts; Gloria, who becomes the sister Fernanda always wished for; and Gloria’s seductive brother Miguel, gentle one moment, angry the next and, like Fernanda, a mestizo–half Indian and half Spanish. As Fernanda penetrates Miguel’s layers of hidden feelings, she’s torn between him and the handsome soldier Nicolas, who has long pursued Fernanda and plans to marry her when they reach California.
But propelling Fernanda along the journey is her search for Mama’s Pima Indian past, a past Mama refused to talk about, a past with secrets that Fernanda is determined to learn. The truths she discovers will change the way she sees her ancestry, her family, and herself.

“ Funny, insightful and informative. Never dull or dry reading. Travel guides are rarely this well written.”

“I really enjoyed reading this humorous guide on how to make your cruise an enjoyable one without mishaps and regrets and also without breaking the bank!”

“This is a fun book for new cruisers who want someone to “give them the inside scoop”, so to speak. Deb Graham does just that, with hysterical little details (“never poop in the cabin bathroom, just don’t”) to practical ones about water shoes and bug spray…it’s just packed with lots of good, handy information that I spent hours researching through various channels.”

“My wife kept asking how did I get so smart on our first cruise. I finally admitted I was quoting from Deb Graham’s book, over and over”

“The author keeps it light, so even though it’s packed with tips and information, it’s a fun read. Keep your highlighter handy, because it IS packed with good tips for your first cruise – or your next one.”

“ Well-organized and easy to read, this book contains a wealth of useful information for new cruisers – and even those who are not first-timers will gain some useful pointers. There are many laugh-out-loud funny bits as well.”

Come Eat at My Table prologue

It’s said that the way we are raised forms who we are as adults. It’s all the experiences we have had in life that make us who we are. Mom was no different. Her experiences definitely shaped who she was.
I learned at an early age that it was my mom’s goal in life to feed everyone. She believed that food connected people and made them happy. Many of my own most vivid memories come from when we were sitting at the table eating with friends and family. Besides just inviting friends over for dinner, Mom would have someone over to eat in payment for a good deed. Mom would always make a meal for someone who was sick or in need. If she knew that someone was depressed, they would be the recipients of a plate of cupcakes. It was her signature touch of love that made all her food special. Mom never failed to include a card along with the food with a few words of encouragement. If dessert was given, it was always presented on a pretty plate intended for the receiver to keep. Mom was famous for her cooking, especially for her cupcakes that were decorated individually.
It wasn’t until the year that my sister and I turned sixteen that we realized why Mom had an underlying need to feed everyone. She wanted everyone to know they were loved – by her and by God. I remember that year as being one of the best of our lives. I don’t exactly know why because it was a year of great difficulty for my parents and for us as a family. In spite of those difficulties, I remember that year as being fun and good.
Mom was one of those people that didn’t realize all the good she did or the number of people she touched. She did what she did because she felt God told her to. She didn’t do it for show. There was something deep down inside her that made her want to reach out to others. She never wanted anyone to feel as she had felt as a child, which was unloved. It wasn’t until the project for school our sophomore year that my sister and I found out why Mom was the way she was.
It’s a story I will never forget because it was one that was difficult for my mom to tell and for us to hear. She wanted to shade my sister and I from her past, but I think I’m better for knowing it. I think you will be, too.

  27. HOLDING BACK by Helen Pollard
    Contemporary romance

“Excuse me. You’ve picked up the wrong bag.”
Deep and decisive, the voice startled Laura from behind as she loaded her luggage onto her hard-won airport trolley.
“No, I don’t think so.” She swung round to confront the voice’s owner. Unnerved to find him towering over her, she took a step back, stumbling over her trolley in the process.
With lightning speed, he reached out to catch her arm, his grip strong as he helped her regain her balance. When she was upright again, she took in piercing blue eyes, thick dark brown hair, a hint of stubble on a tanned face—and felt an immediate jolt of attraction.
Laura ignored it. “I can manage, thank you,” she snapped, thinking she wouldn’t have tripped if he hadn’t surprised her like that.
He released his hold and raised an eyebrow. “As I said, you have my bag.”
Pushing away long strands of chestnut-brown hair that had dared escape their ponytail, Laura returned his gaze.
“No, this is definitely mine.” She was hot, harassed, and late. The last thing she needed was a futile argument over her own luggage!
“Would you mind if I check?”
“Help yourself.” Unable to disguise her impatience, Laura waved at it, adding, “But I am in a hurry.” She winced at the hostile tone in her voice, but she really didn’t have time for this. Tapping her foot in irritation, she waited to be proved right as he crouched over her trolley.
“Would you care to look?” he asked.
Laura’s foot stopped tapping. Recognising undisguised triumph on his face, she read the label over his shoulder with trepidation, but there it was in black and white—Daniel Stone, London Gatwick to Porto. The heat that rose in her cheeks seemed to burn right through her skin.
“But it’s the same as mine!” she blustered, watching with embarrassment as he hoisted the heavy bag from the trolley with ease.
“It’s hardly a unique design,” he commented, shrugging broad shoulders. “If you weren’t in such a tearing hurry, you might have spotted your own on the carousel.”
Laura spun around to see her bag riding forlornly around with the few that were left. Mortified, she opened her mouth to apologise.
But he spoke first. “Personally, I would advocate that old saying ‘More haste, less speed.'” His tone softened a little as he added, “I’m sorry, but you’re not the only hot, tired person whose flight was delayed, you know.” And off he strolled through the terminal, his bag flung over his shoulder, without a backward glance.

  28. TO DANCE ONE MORE DAY by Rachel Jones
    Contemporary Romance

Jillian lingered behind, thinking about her students. This was the best group of seven-year olds she had taught since opening the school. She enjoyed teaching all ages but this group was the highlight of her week. Sighing, she wondered if maybe it had something to do with the fact Lily would have been seven this year. Brushing the thought away, she moved to the piano and focused her attention on arranging the music for the dance company’s rehearsal the next night.
Her school of ballet was impressive but her dance company was her crowning glory. Expanding her lungs to their fullest she exhaled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. The North Carolina Ballet Company, now in its fifth year of existence, continued to experience growing pains and would for several years to come. As they grew in number they also grew in depth and dimension, becoming a cohesive group of artists excited to tell many stories through dance. Their progress was measured by the reputation they enjoyed for offering professional performances to the surrounding communities.
“You have a good looking group of ballerinas, Jilly,” remarked David as he crossed the studio floor, followed by Alan.
The familiar voice brought a smile to her face. She had met David soon after moving to Charlotte when she was searching for a financial advisor. They had spent a lot of time together working on the financial end of setting up her school. When she took the plunge a year later, with David’s encouragement, and started the North Carolina Ballet Company, he was her biggest fan. Feeling she could trust him with her life, she was grateful he had accepted her invitation to be a part of the company’s initial board of directors.
Turning around at the sound of the tenor voice her eyes darted from her friend to the familiar form standing beside him. Her smile disappeared.
“You!” Jillian took a step back. “What are you doing here?”
“What’s wrong?” David’s gaze bounced back and forth between his friends. “Do you two know each other?”
Her eyes remained fixed on the doctor as if she were seeing him for the first time. He was tall, about six feet she estimated, with thick brown hair and he had the most gorgeous, deep set brown eyes. It was like looking into pools of chocolate and she was finding it hard not to stare. She shifted her gaze to her friend. “I recall seeing him at the hospital, after the explosion.”
“Oh, come on, Ms. Russell. I performed the surgery on your shoulder and I was your doctor for two days—until you fired me. And all you have to say is, ‘I recall seeing you’?”
“If memory serves it was a day and a half. And I’d prefer not talking about anything having to do with the explosion, if you don’t mind.”
“I see. Well, I hope your recovery is going well.”
    “Yes it is thank you.”

Life in the frozen wastelands of Texas is anything but easy, but for Clay Whitaker there is always more at stake than mere survival.

Yellowstone, along with two other Super Volcanoes, exploded with a tremendous fury following months of heightened seismic activity worldwide. The devastating eruptions released unmeasurable quantities of ash into the atmosphere. Coastlines were changed. New canyons were formed. Temperatures plummeted, dragging economies down, too. With no real way to sustain order, governments around the world began to fold, societies collapsed.

It’s been seven years since the ash rained down from the sky. Populations are thinning. Food is scarce. Despair overwhelming. Clay and his sister Megan have taken a handful of orphaned children into their home—a home soaring 16 stories into the sky. Providing for his adopted family is a 24/7 job for Clay. And with roughly six short months a year to gather enough food and supplies to last the long, brutal winter, Clay is forced to spend much of his time away from home—scavenging, hunting, and bartering.

Despite the vicious, unforgiving world he lives in, Clay has grown accustomed to his new life. That is, until he meets Kelsey Lambert.

Now, with winter rolling in earlier than ever, Clay must swiftly adapt to the changes in his life to ensure the safety of those he cares about.

This excerpt is from QUEEN, an inspirational regency romance.

“I don’t want him knowing what either of you look like. You need to leave until I get him back to the inn.”

    “It’s not safe.”

“The situation is a disaster, but he’s safe. I trust him.”

Owen listened to the voices. The first was Isadore/Iola. Thankfully, she’d dropped the horrible screech she’d been using as part of the barmaid act. The other belonged to a man. Older, he guessed, but he couldn’t say by how much.

“I don’t like it. This isn’t part of the plan.”

    A woman’s voice, also older. Isadore/Iola’s parents?

The voices talked some more in a hushed whisper, then a door opened and closed.

“You can stop pretending to be unconscious, Mr. Loring.”

“How do you know my name?” Owen sat up, his movement slow. He winced at the pain while taking in his surroundings. He was on a pallet in the main room of a small cottage. His hand explored the source of his discomfort and found a tender lump on the back of his head.

“I make it my business to learn things about people.” She stood near the front door, not very far away in the smallness of the room. Her frizzy red hair looked as if it might take flight were it not held down by the small linen cap that was part of her uniform at the inn.

“I’m at a disadvantage, then, because I’m fairly certain I don’t know your name. Isadore. Or should I say Iola?”

A kind of tired silence was her only response, and Owen decided to go for the jugular.

    “Maybe it’s Queen?”

Her hissed intake of breath told him he’d hit the mark.

“I stopped to visit Peter on my way here. He mentioned you two went fishing.”

She smiled then, and the lines of tension eased from around her eyes. “Peter never mentions anything on accident.”

Owen stared, puzzling out her words. “You didn’t go fishing, did you?”

A quick shake of the head. “But you and I appear to be fishing in the same pond.”

Peter had always been a sly fox. He’d told Owen, but the younger agent hadn’t listened.

“Nobody’s seen you in these parts for a long time.”

She tipped her head in agreement. “Four years.”

    “Where have you been?”

“Does it matter?” She frowned at him.

“You told someone in this room that you trust me. So trust me now. Tell me what’s going on.”

    “Where do I start?”

“Your name would be a good place.”

Her mouth again stretched wide, her eyes crinkling at the corners, and light danced in the blue orbs. “Let’s stick with Queen for now.”
